1.  Artificial Life refers to the relationship between humans and machines that is based on communication, control, and feedback contained in messages.  Humans can work with computers to help them make decisions and control situations.  Artificial life is created with digital information and is the basis of many digital art pieces.  This art form is about the ability use the technology for reproductions and the manipulation of variables.  Art created using artificial life uses mathematical information to represent the actions of actual objects.  Using computers helps the artist to understand ideas and intellectual processes while, at the same time, change them and spark the thinking of the viewer.

2.  Artificial intelligence and intelligent agents are other major themes in digital art.  Artificial intelligence refers to a machine operating with prior training in an area and having the ability to make decisions based on that prior knowledge.  An artist can use this to provide viewers with a look in a mirror at how we communicate and what is truly subjective and objective in life.  Intelligent agents are the software programs we encounter when using computers.  They can be helpful, such as file managers, or invasive such as cookies.

3.  The establishment of connections or interaction between remote locations are called telepresence and telematics.  That plus telerobotics is another theme in digital art.  Telepresence has been with us since 1844 when Samuel Morse sent the first telegraph.  It provides digital art with an infinite number of opportunities to be present in many locations at once through the computer.  The internet represents a huge telepresence in our current world.   The internet has also make telerobotics a reality.  The use of things like webcams gives us live views of distant places and things.  Artists can use telepresence and telerobotics to explore human interactions place the viewer in a virtual environment.

4.  Body and identity are common themes in digital art.  They focus on how we define ourselves virtually and physically.  Through the internet we have a way to be present in places other than where we actually are.  Another aspect of this is that we can be represented as ourselves, as a character we have created in our mind, or in an expanded reality or what is possible in our world.  This shows how digital art has the capability of placing our identity in an abstract reality.

5.  The terms database, data visualization, and mapping refer to another important aspect of digital art. A database is a foundation in digital art which can be tapped, to help us understand what is going on.  For the data to have meaning it needs to be organized into a structure or mapped to allow us to see where we are and where we are going.  Data visualization allows the viewer to experience changes over time as the database evolves.  This is the primary element of mapping which happens with the change in the data.  Mapping allows the user to customize and personalize the information.  While these elements of database, data visualization, and mapping are a basis for digital art, some digital art projects have also made them the focus of the work.
